The export of Vietnamese fruits to important markets such as China, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Europe… is increasingly favored and highly appreciated for quality. The export value of Vietnamese fruits next year is higher than the previous year with an increasingly large volume.
Forecast, the export turnover of the vegetable and fruit sector will continue to increase thanks to the expanding products and export markets for Vietnamese fruits.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam’s vegetable and fruit exports are estimated at 4.63 billion USD, an increase of over 30% compared to the same period last year. Contributing significantly to the growth of vegetable and fruit exports, the durian sector continues to break export turnover records. According to the Vietnam Vegetable and Fruit Association, in the first 8 months of 2024, the export turnover of durian is estimated at over 1.8 billion USD, contributing 40% to the total export turnover of vegetables and fruits.
China is currently the largest export market for Vietnamese durian. In 2023, Vietnam exported about 500,000 tons of fresh durian, achieving a turnover of 2.3 billion USD, of which 90% was exported to China. In 2024, the demand for durian in the Chinese market continues to increase, and the export turnover of durian in the last months of the year is expected to rise significantly. Notably, recently, Vietnam signed a protocol for exporting frozen durian to China, marking a new turning point to boost the export of Vietnamese durian to the Chinese market more strongly and sustainably, laying the foundation for the future development of the durian industry towards processing, in line with global trends. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts that the export turnover of durian in 2024 will reach 3-3.5 billion USD, with frozen durian accounting for about 400-500 million USD.
Currently, Vietnam has about 1.1 million hectares of land for growing potential fruit varieties, especially tropical fruits, among which dragon fruit, mango, lychee, longan, durian, rambutan… are the ones bringing high value. Each year, Vietnam produces 12-14 million tons of fruit. The quality and characteristics of tropical fruits in Vietnam are favored and highly appreciated by many markets. To continue expanding the export market for Vietnamese fruits, recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has made great efforts to coordinate with other ministries and sectors as well as directing specialized agencies to negotiate and address technical barriers to open the market. Specifically, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has completed the technical negotiation process and is moving on to carry out legal procedures to allow the import of Vietnamese passion fruit into the US market. When Vietnamese passion fruit is exported to the US market, it will be the 9th fresh fruit along with dragon fruit, mango, longan, lychee, rambutan, sapodilla, grapefruit, and coconut from Vietnam exported to the US market. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the US Department of Agriculture have also initiated the review process for some new fruits from Vietnam such as: seedless lemon, guava, jackfruit.
Currently, the two leading markets for Vietnamese agricultural exports are China and the United States, both showing many positive signals, promising to increase the export turnover of fruits and vegetables in the last months of the year and in the coming years. It is forecasted that Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables may reach a record export turnover of 7 billion USD in 2024./.
